A little background on Pulborough:

Pulborough was mentioned oin the Domesday Book, but it had been a settlement since before the Romans came. The Romans used the ford to cross the river Arun, and built a mansion at nearby Hardham. In the 11th century a motte and bailey castle was built here, but only the earthworks, known as Park Mount, remain. The Saxons built a bridge over the river, and in 1309, Stopham Bridge was constructed which is still in use.
